Indoor public spaces where a face covering is required differs on a state-by-state basis, but in general cover stores, shopping malls, bars, restaurants, and public transport (planes, buses, trains, trams, taxis and ride-hailing services). When outdoors if you are unable to maintain a 6 foot distance from someone else.
Depending on the state there are exceptions for people with disabilities or medical conditions. Also when you are actually eating/drinking you can remove your face covering. Excising alone, and swimming are exceptions.
This requirements will always be changing, and remember that these are only state level requirements. You will also come across local (county/city) requirements that might override state requirements.
